Windham ZIP Code Coverage
Four post offices anchor Windham's main postal areas. Each code identifies a delivery system, not a boundary drawn by the Town. Use the station and place descriptions as search aids, then verify a specific street with USPS and the Windham parcel systems.
| ZIP | Area Covered | Post Office | Directory Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 06226 | Central Willimantic district | Willimantic, 919 Main Street | Willimantic is now within the Town of Windham |
| 06256 | North Windham section | North Windham, 690 Boston Post Road | Routing tables may show Chaplin |
| 06266 | South Windham section | South Windham, 12 Main Street | Delivery area is not a town or CDP line |
| 06280 | Parts using the Windham label | Windham, 6 Scotland Road | Confirm the parcel's legal situs |
The Windham ZIP code directory does not count 06235 as a Windham code. Connecticut's official list assigns it to Chaplin. It appears near North Windham codes in a USPS routing table, but no authoritative source proves that it serves a Town of Windham parcel. An address-specific postal result is the proper way to resolve that question.
Verify Windham ZIP Addresses
The USPS ZIP Code Lookup has three useful modes. By Address accepts a company, street, unit, city, state, and optional code. By City and State returns associated codes. Cities by ZIP returns recognized postal city names. Only the first mode checks the complete address that will be searched in local records.
| USPS field | Type | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Street Address | Required text | Exact number and street |
| Apt/Suite | Optional text | Unit-level delivery |
| City and State | Required | Postal label and Connecticut |
| ZIP | Optional text | Check an existing code |
| Cities by ZIP | Separate mode | Recognized city names |
The live USPS choice screen shows those three routes.

Save the normalized result exactly as returned. It is postal evidence only and does not name an occupant or settle a municipal boundary.
North Windham Routing Quirk
North Windham illustrates why postal routing and local government must be kept apart. The station uses 06256, yet the inspected USPS label-routing table groups 06235, 06242, and 06256 under a Chaplin routing label. That instruction helps move mail. It does not annex North Windham, change the parcel's town, or create a Chaplin record custodian for a Windham address.
Resolve the quirk in two steps. First, enter the complete address in USPS rather than selecting a town from a code list. Second, search Windham AxisGIS by the normalized street and number. If the parcel appears, record its parcel ID, situs address, owner-mailing field, and map key. The Town Clerk deed and recorded map control the legal land description.
Keep both labels. Store the USPS city and ZIP as delivery data, and store Town of Windham as the municipality only when town records confirm it.
Find Windham Residents by ZIP
A ZIP code can narrow a broad search, but most Windham record portals are not built around it. USPS is the primary postal checker. The Connecticut civil property inquiry offers an optional ZIP field, but it also requires the city or town. AxisGIS searches owner, street address, or parcel ID. SearchIQS land records use party, book and page, instrument, and date fields. No verified ZIP filter was found for PermitLink or the dynamic tax portal.
- Confirm the exact delivery address and code through USPS.
- Use Windham as the town in the civil property inquiry, then add street or optional ZIP.
- Search the Windham assessor or AxisGIS with the street address and retain the parcel key.
- Use the owner's name or parcel-linked deed reference in Town Clerk records.
- Move to the Windham street directory when a code has narrowed the work to one road.
This flow avoids a false ZIP-wide roster. A postal code may help route a request or test a returned address, but it cannot identify every person tied to a parcel.
The property-court capture shows ZIP as one optional control beside required town and other case filters.

The screen confirms that the code supplements the municipality and street. It does not replace either one.
Windham ZIP Plus Four Detail
The USPS AIS Viewer adds address-quality, county, delivery, and ZIP+4 reference tools. USPS says the reference is updated monthly, and the data is not a bulk resident export. ZIP+4 can distinguish delivery segments within a five-digit code, but it still does not prove who lives at an address.
The official reference screen supplies the proper context for ZIP+4 research.

Use that added precision to fix delivery text before moving to Windham's parcel and deed indexes. Do not convert a delivery segment into a neighborhood boundary.
- ZIP code
- A USPS mail-routing code, not a legal town boundary.
- ZIP+4
- A five-digit code plus four digits that refine a delivery segment.
- PO-box ZIP
- A code or use centered on post-office boxes rather than street delivery.
- Unique ZIP
- A code assigned to one high-volume organization; none was documented for Windham.
- Carrier route
- A delivery path used by postal operations, not a resident list.
Windham ZIP Is Not ZCTA
The Census Bureau builds ZIP Code Tabulation Areas, or ZCTAs, as broad statistical approximations of USPS service patterns. They help summarize census data, but they are not live postal routes, parcel lines, or municipal borders. A South Windham census-designated place and the Town of Windham are also different geographies.
The Census ZCTA guidance states that distinction directly.

Use a ZCTA for clearly labeled statistics. Use USPS for delivery, AxisGIS for parcels, and the recorded deed or map for legal land facts.
Windham ZIP and Old Names
Historical searches add another layer. Willimantic existed as a city before its 1983 consolidation with the Town of Windham, so an old directory or newspaper may place a person in Willimantic without a modern municipal label. Criss-cross directories connect an old street number to a name or business, while Digital Windham, Willimantic Library, and the Connecticut State Library can help interpret the entry.
Do not retrofit a modern ZIP onto an old item unless the source itself supports it. Keep separate columns for historic place, present municipality, and current postal city. An old map can show building use, a directory can name a dated occupant or business, and a current parcel card can supply today's town key. Each source answers a different question.
Note: No authoritative Windham ZIP split or realignment year was located, so a directory should not invent one from changed labels.
Windham ZIP Boundary Limits
No verified polygon was located that maps every postal edge against every Windham parcel. That gap matters. Addresses with a familiar local label can sit outside an assumed area, and mail-routing tables can show another town without changing the local government. The Windham ZIP code directory must therefore lead from an exact USPS result to a municipal parcel check.
A code also cannot reveal everyone associated with an address. The same digits can contain many streets and record roles. It omits household members from ownership records, says nothing about protected addresses, and cannot turn a court party or business mailing address into proof of residence. Use it to narrow geography, not to make an identity claim.
Boundary check. Confirm delivery with USPS, municipal situs with Windham Assessor or AxisGIS, and legal boundaries with the deed and recorded map.
Record a ZIP Result Without Losing the Town
A useful Windham ZIP code directory note preserves three different labels: the normalized USPS delivery address, the Town of Windham parcel municipality, and any historical place name printed in the source. Copy the ZIP and ZIP+4 exactly from USPS, then save the AxisGIS parcel ID, situs address, and map key. If a deed or recorded map is needed, carry that parcel key into SearchIQS and keep the book, page, instrument, and legal description with the result.
Do not repair an older directory or newspaper entry by silently replacing Willimantic with Windham. Willimantic remained a separate city government until July 1, 1983, while current parcels sit within the consolidated town. Preserve the publication wording and add a separate present-municipality field. The same rule applies to North Windham, South Windham, and Windham Center: each is meaningful local geography, but none replaces checking the legal town.
When a portal has no ZIP field, do not force the code into a name or street box. USPS is the primary ZIP authority; the Judicial Branch property search accepts an optional ZIP, while AxisGIS and SearchIQS work better from a complete address or parcel and party identifiers. A blank ZIP-filtered result describes only that query and date. Save the screen, remove unnecessary filters, and follow up with the Town Assessor, Town Clerk, USPS, or custodian when the exact boundary or address controls the conclusion.
Keep the verification date because USPS delivery data, court displays, and local assessment portals change on different schedules. A current postal answer should never be projected backward into an undated historical source.
